Overview
Opteum Inc. (NYSE:OPX) is a real estate investment trust (REIT), which operates an integrated mortgage-related investment portfolio and a mortgage origination platform. The REIT invests primarily in, but is not limited to, residential mortgage-related securities issued by the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae), the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac) and the Government National Mortgage Association (Ginnie Mae). It earns returns on the spread between the yield on its assets and its costs, including the interest expense on the funds it borrows.
History
Opteum Inc. was formed in September 2003 to invest primarily in residential mortgage related securities. In 2005, Opteum Inc. merged with Opteum Financial Services, which operates the company's mortgage platform.
Opteum Financial Services, a subsidiary of Opteum Inc., was founded by industry veterans Peter Norden and Martin Levine in 1999. Today, Opteum employs the best mortgage professionals across the nation, all empowered to exceed the expectations of their customers, partners and shareholders.
